Hugh Williams
Hugh Williams grew up in Australia’s Blue Mountains on his family orchard. Taken by his mother to anthroposophic meetings as a toddler in the late 1940s, his fate was doubly sealed when he discovered Rudolf Steiner’s Agriculture in 1972. He is a survivor of more that 50 years of farming. Retirement six years ago “made no noticeable difference,” except that he now has to add his saw-milling hobby on to the regular farm day.
Hugh and his wife Hanna have operated Threshold Farm in New York’s Hudson Valley for 22 years. To “keep out of trouble” they have just planted a new orchard on the Keyline pattern. Hugh is a passionate advocate of the power of independent entrepreneurial farms to create a joyful and livable future.

Holism and Biodynamics:
The Potential Opened Up by the Closed Farm Idea
On Threshold Farm we have established ‘proof of concept’ for Steiner’s fundamental idea: the individualization of a closed farm, technically, economically, and financially, over a 30 year period. Hugh will present these findings and their implications for soil fertility, resilience, and financial wellbeing. A lively discussion is anticipated.
